Sandra Kalef

Died December 18, 2014 – Calgary

Sandy was born during the 1935 Regina riot. Her family moved to Calgary in 1945. She attended Central High School and then UBC for a couple years. After the birth of Abbe, Joseph and Diana, she moved back to Calgary and began her “career” of lifelong learning. Sandy received her BA, MA and LLB at the University of Calgary. She continued on as a researcher with the Office of the Auditor General of Canada, City of Edmonton, Municipal District of Pincher Creek and an interdisciplinary unit at U of C. She also acted as Executive Assistant to the Task Force on Canadian Unity, and then began her legal career. Sandy articled with Howard Mackie before becoming legal counsel for CTV during the 1988 Winter Olympics. Sandy was also a legal and policy analyst with Energy, Mines and Resources Canada. Her fourth career included legal and technical writing as well as journalism for local publications such as Avenue Magazine. She also volunteered her time for a variety of organizations locally and nationally. One of her greatest joys was walking every single day along the pathway at the Glenmore Reservoir as well as taking every chance she had to ride her bike during the summer. Sandy is survived by her three children Abbe (Simon), Joseph (Kathryn) and Diana (Elliott), seven grandchildren, Alan, Peter, Steven, Jonah, Micah, Luca and Zoë, her siblings Marcia, Robert (Sydney) and Michael (Reva), four well-loved nieces and nephews and many cherished good friends, including the Group of 9. Sandy’s most cherished time was spent with family and they all surrounded her as she passed away on her terms.
