Birth: July 21, 1923 in Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia
Death: April 12, 2016 (age 92) in Victoria, B.C.
Biography: The following information was provided by her son Ivan Somlai:
My Mother (July 21, 1923 – March 12, 2016) was born in Liptovský Svätý Mikuláš (in Hungarian, Liptószentmiklós ), then a Hungarian part of Slovakia. Along with her parents, she moved to Hungary during the war. In Budapest, she worked at Medimpex.
An article I wrote, primarily to let my daughters have a published record about my background, provides some details about our escape (3 attempts) from Hungary during the revolution in 1956 and includes some pictures and I can find more if you wish. https://journals.uvic.ca/index.php/mmd/article/view/19627 (just hit the pdf button on the right)
We settled in Montreal; when separatism was peaking in the 70s, my parents, along with 3 other families, moved lock, stock and barrel to Victoria in the early 80s so as to avoid another potential need to emigrate, even though we all spoke French and felt safe.3. Surnames of her ancestors include: Grünwald; Löwi; Földiák; Démián going back to mid-1800s.
My Father (September 10, 1913 – March 24, 1998) was born in Sopron, Hungary. He was a textile engineer at Lőrinci Fonó (Lorinc Textile Factory) in Budapest. He was cremated at the Royal Oak Burial Park in Victoria, BC.5. Surnames of his ancestors include: Schwartz; Rosenfeld, & about 20 other surnames going back to 1807.6. Our relatives settled around the world: Hungary, Austria, France, Italy, Australia, Israel, USA.
