Philip Liberman

He is remembered on a large marker stone placed in the cemetery in 2026 to acknowledge the people who were buried somewhere in the cemetery.

The information confirming the burial and biographical details is from Congregation Emanu-El Burial Register 1946 as related through the JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry (JOWBR). Note that JOWBR states that the British Columbia Archives do not have a record of “Phillip Silverman” who died 14 November 1924 aged 36, but do have a record for “Philip Liberman”, born in Russia, who died 14 November 1924 aged 38. The British Columbia Archives death registration number is 1924-09-329068. The account of the funeral of Philip Liberman is attached to this memorial.

Prior to the Roll of Occupants of Graves in Hebrew Cemetery 1862-1941, (Roll of Occupants) there were listings for Liberman, but not for Silverman. In that record the script for the letter “L” looked a lot like the letter “S”. Subsequent burial rolls began recording Phillip Silverman.

Biography:
According to the 1921 Canadian Census for Victoria, Philip was single, 34 years old and living as a lodger at the home of Florence Hanover at 1403 Cork St. Philip was listed as a merchant.
