Biography:
Ron Taylor Historian at Acacia Lodge No. 11 wrote the following biography:
Harold Lester Kline was born on December 25, 1921 in Edmonton, Alberta. He was the youngest son born to Lillian and Irving Kline. Irving was a jeweller and a pioneering optometrist in Edmonton.

Harold married Ruthe Rosalyn Carman at Toronto, Ontario on May 6th, 1943. Following graduation from the University of Toronto’s College of Optometry, Harold joined his father and brother as an associate at Irving Kline & Sons Optometrists in January of 1944. Harold and Ruthe had three daughters: Teresa Leslie (born approx. 1946) and twins Rosemary Ellen and Rowena Susan (born at Edmonton April 7th, 1948).

In September of 1951, Harold opened his own optometrist office in Edmonton just six doors down from his father’s jewelry shop. He ran his own business at various locations in Edmonton until at least September of 1973.

Harold moved to Victoria in 1987. He remarried and divorced before his death on March 7th, 1997.

His wife Ruthe died at Edmonton on December 8th, 1963, aged 41. Rowena Kline, divorced, died at Vancouver on October 3rd, 1996. Eldest daughter Teresa Swern died at Toronto on May 24th, 2026.

According to the 1931 Census of Canada, Harold’s father was born in Quebec. He became a jeweller and was living in Edmonton, Alberta in 1931. Harold’s mother, Lillian was born in England and immigrated to Canada in 1910. Harold, his elder brother David and his parents were living in a six room brick house at the time of the census.
