The Daily Colonist reported that James and his family were members of the Order of the Frontiers as well as other secret societies. His death was shrouded in mystery. He was unconscious when he died. He was buried with Masonic and Odd Fellow rites. The pallbearers were: T Prosser, E Frank, L Lewis, G Shaw, C Maynard, W T Williams.
