Birth: 1848 in Holland
Death: June 18, 1895 (age 47) in Victoria, B.C.
The Daily Colonist reported that James and his family were members of the Order of the Frontiers as well as being involved in other secret societies. He was unconscious when he died and his death is shrouded in mystery. James was buried with Masonic and Odd Fellow rites. The pallbearers were: T Prosser, E Frank, L Lewis, G Shaw, C Maynard, W T Williams.

James Cohen was a Freemason. The masonic symbol of the square and compass is the central motif of the gravestone.
