Biography:
Aaron Shnitka was born on April 15, 1860, in Latvia, the son of Abraham Shnitka. He married Sarah Esther Schnittke. Between 1887 and 1901 the couple had four sons and three daughters.
According to the 1916 Canada Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, Aaron, his wife and seven children immigrated to Canada in 1911. By 1916 Aaron and his wife and three of his children, Max, Minnie and Leah were living in Calgary. Aaron was a grocer. According to the 1921 Census of Canada, Aaron and Sarah both became Naturalized Canadian citizens in 1914. At that time, Aaron, Sarah and their children Benjamin, Fannie and Leah were still living in Calgary. Aaron owned his six room wooden home as well as his grocery business. His son Max was in the grocery business with him. The Census recorded that Aaron’s mother tongue was Jewish and he could read, write, and speak English but not French.
