Biography:
In 1857 Sarah and businessman David Oppenheimer married in Columbia, California; a small town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. David was involved in real estate and the restaurant business. The couple moved to Yale, BC where they entertained many mining, railway and government dignitaries.

David became the Mayor of Vancouver and was responsible for establishing much of the infrastructure of the city.

After 23 years of marriage Sarah died childless on October 15, 1880. She had been seriously ill for many months before her death. David arranged for Sarah’s body to be buried in Victoria as at that time, ours was the only Jewish cemetery in the province. Following Sarah’s death David helped to establish the Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver which contains a section for Jewish burials. In 1883 David married Julia Walter 1852-1897 and is buried beside her in Salem Fields Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
