Biography:
Serguei (Shimon) was from Kharkiv, Ukraine. During the war his mother, Eugenia Wachterman, was evacuated to Siberia, where he was born. While his biological father’s name is unknown, he was raised from the age of three by his stepfather, Valentin Khartchenko. Following the war, the family returned to Kharkiv, where Serguei graduated from the Medical and Dental University of Kharkiv.

He later moved to Moscow to establish a distinguished career as a medical and dental scientist and clinician, eventually authoring numerous professional papers and patents. Serguei married his university classmate, Nadejda, in Kharkiv, and the family immigrated to Canada in January 1992. He had been a proud resident of Victoria, BC, since 1998.

Serguei is deeply missed by his family, including Nadejda, his wife of 60 years; his twin daughters, Alissa (David) and Alina; and his grandchildren, Rachel, Arielle, Benjamin, Eliana, and Isabella.
