Biography:
Mollie Pieser was born in Germany. By the 1880’s, Molllie, her father, Adolph, and older brother, Kurt were living in New York City. On November 23, 1887 the 25 year old Mollie married the 27 year old Julius H. Franck.
According to the 1891 Census of Canada, Mollie, Julius, Adolph and Kurt immigrated to Canada in 1890, Mollie and Julius were living in Victoria with Mollie’s sixty year old widowed father, their unnamed 19 year old domestic “Chinaman” and four lodgers. Julius’ occupation was listed as “Retail Grocer Bookkeeper.”
The Victoria City Directory indicated that Julius was bookkeeper for B. Gordon in 1892. Mollie and Julius were a grocer. The Daily Colonist reported on October 17, 1893 that Mollie’s grocery store could fill orders for Paragon heating oil.
The 1895 Victoria City Directory recorded that Mrs. M.P. Franck had a grocery and provisions store at 159 Fort Street. By 1897 Julius had become a salesman ultimately for the Simon Leiser Co.
The 1901 Census of Canada recorded that Mollie and Julius were living with Mollie’s brother Kurt and his wife in Victoria. Census documents report that Mollie spoke English and was literate.
By 1909 the couple had moved into their home at 1082 Davies Street in Oak Bay. Julius died the following year. In 1915 Mollie travelled sometimes to San Francisco where her brother lived. Although Julius had had a legal dispute with a manager at the Simon Leiser Co, Mollie listed Simon Leiser as a ‘friend’ on her September, 1915 returning immigration documents.
According to the 1921 Census of Canada, Mollie owned a wood house on Davies Street and was living there alone. The census also indicated that she was unable to speak French.
The Victoria Daily Times reported on February 6, 1922 that Mollie who had become an American citizen by marriage was seeking to become a naturalized Canadian. She died in 1926. According to the papers, her remains were shipped to Vancouver for cremation.
